Who We Can Help
Michigan Center for Facial Pain & Sleep is here to address the gamut of pain and sleep issues you may be experiencing. We can evaluate and manage the following conditions through custom treatment plans so you can get back to living the life you deserve.
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD)
This includes a range of signs and symptoms involving the matiatory muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJs), or both. The exact cause of a person’s TMJ disorder (TMD) is often multifactorial and can be difficult to determine, which is why we're here to help.
Ear Symptoms
Includes pain, fullness, or ringing. Not all ear symptoms are created equal, nor can they all be blamed on jaw dysfunction. A thorough evaluation will eliminate the uncertainty and frustration many patients feel when experiencing inexplicable symptoms.
Tension & Migraine Headaches
While headache is a diagnosis in and of itself, the frequency, duration, and timing can feed into and off of temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain conditions. Accurate diagnosis and properly executed management strategy is vital in the treatment success of any pain condition.
Neck Pain & Trigger Points
Pains in the neck can be as basic as tension in the shoulders that radiates into the or or as extensive as a sprain/strain injury secondary to trauma. No matter the cause, neck pain and TMD often go hand in hand.
Bruxism
This is a non functional or parafunctional behavior of the jaw muscles characterized by activities like clenching or grinding the teeth, bracing or thrusting the mandible (lower jaw), or rhythmic chewing like movements when the mouth is empty. These behaviors are often subconscious but can occur when asleep or awake.
Orofacial Pain Conditions
Persistent pain in the face, ears, teeth, and/or jaw has often been accompanied by tightness and soreness in the jaw and facial muscles, limited jaw opening, difficulty chewing, and, at times, symptoms like burning and tingling in the face and lips.
Jaw Problems
Issues can include clicking, popping, or grating of the jaw joints, changes to your bite, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, and altered movements of the jaw during function.
Myalgia and Myofascial Pain
Chronic in nature, myalgia can involve a single muscle or group of muscles. It can result from acute strain or chronic over-use or misuse of muscles (e.g. poor posture, stress, subconscious fatiguing behaviors).
Persistent Tooth Pain
Be it individual tooth pain or generalized sensitivity, when the dentist's tests or xrays don't show a problem, you still need answers. Mechanical dental treatment on the teeth will not resolve a complaint if the teeth themselves are the wrong target. Far too often, teeth or other oral structures are the site of pain but not the source.
Snoring & Sleep Apnea
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleep condition in which breathing is interrupted by physical blockage of the airway. Episodes of shallow or stopped breathing triggers the brain awake. OSA is characterized by loud snoring and gasping or even abrupt awakenings during sleep.
